What the Critics Say

Brian Law, Music Director
updated 1998

Born and educated in England, Brian Law immigrated to Canada in 1965, where he was central to the musical life of Ottawa for over a quarter of a century. He was Music Director of The Ottawa Choral Society, The Ottawa Symphony Orchestra and the chamber orchestra, Thirteen Strings. At his farewell concert he was awarded the Freedom of the City, and the Brian Law Opera Scholarship was established in his honour.
In 1991 Brian moved to New Zealand to become Music Director of the Christchurch City Choir. In his new home he has rapidly assumed a similar significant artistic role.

As well as the City Choir, he regularly conducts for Canterbury Opera and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. He has recorded with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Auckland Philharmonia, and has conducted both of these orchestras for seasons of Petrouchka, Giselle, and The Nutcracker for the Royal New Zealand Ballet.

Conducting engagements in 1998 include Eugene Onegin for Canterbury Opera, a stadium production of Carmen in Auckland, and concerts with the New Zealand Chamber Orchestra and the National Youth Choir in Wellington and Auckland. In August he conducts a Last Night of the Proms concert with the Auckland Philharmonia as well as a pair of concerts in their Main Series.

In April Brian flies to Canada for concerts in Ottawa and then on to Cairo for concerts in the Opera House and at the Pyramids with the Cairo Symphony Orchestra and Dame Malvina Major, with whom he has made three recordings.
