Summer is a great time to get out and about and enjoy the great outdoors. Walking, hiking, and tramping are all relatively inexpensive activities and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels. You can choose from intensive 4-5 day tramps with overnight stays in huts or more genteel day walks. Walking is a great way to really see and experience New Zealand's beautiful bush, coastal and mountain areas. A Bit About The NZ Walkways Sysytem
The New Zealand Walkway System is a concept designed to provide a network of accessible tracks from Cape Reinga to Bluff and catering for all ages and abilities, especially family groups. The overall administration is the responsibility of the New Zealand Walkways Commission, which is serviced by the Departmenty of Survey and Lands. The Canterbury District Walkway Committee acts on behalf of the Commission in the Land District of Canterbury.
Walkers are asked to observe the gazetted by-laws for New Zealand Walkways. These include :
all wildlife, plants and natural features are protected
animals are prohibited, as is the carrying of firearms
rubbish or litter must be removed from the walkway by the person concerned
no unauthorised vehicles are allowed on the walkway
